03:48 pm - Fourth Didn't have to do so much as break out a bandaid for first aid duty yesterday, though a few other people did.
Lots of food (Potluck), free t-shirt, parking right next to the festivities, fireworks... not a bad night, really.

05:18 pm - Things going boom I'm helping with first aid for Sammamish's Fourth festivities and fireworks show. They're expecting like 20000 people. Yikes. That's a lot.

05:16 pm - Grr Thanks to a miscommunication between me and the guy collecting samples for this shift worker study I'm doing... I have to start it over again. Another week of peeing in jars and getting blood drawn, when it was supposed to be done Friday morning. Meh. This was supposed to be easy money. Current Mood: annoyed

11:44 pm 1. All the fluid in my body is attempting to run out of my nose. Freaking allergies.
2. Out hiking today, I came across a deer in the middle of the trail. Normally, as soon as the deer notices me, off it runs. Today, it just looked at me, and went back to grazing. I'm walking closer, making no effort to be quiet. It KNOWS I'm there. Eventually it moves off to one side. I pass by less than 10 feet away. It goes back to dinner.

06:11 pm - Sausage woe I love landjäger sausages, especially as trail food. Much better tasting than pepperoni (Though not as good as really good salami), filling, keeps well... Unfortunately, the only place I know of that carries them around here is a butcher at the Pike Place Market, with hours that don't make it feasible for me to stop in before or after work. The local QFC used to stock them, but then it got remodeled last year and I haven't seen them since.
I guess there's always the online route...
They're normally made with beef and/or pork. My mother found some buffalo ones once at a buffalo ranch's gift shop. Yum. (I like buffalo better than beef when I can get it; leaner and better taste.)

06:43 pm a) Relax, I'm not doing a drug study (Yet). The only study I've signed up for so far is one to measure melatonin levels in people working night shifts; a lot of us at work are taking part. I need to go through and see what other studies are being conducted that I'm eligible for...
b) I'm lazy, especially when it comes to things like house cleaning. No beating around the bush - I'm a slob. Why do dishes today when I can do them tomorrow type stuff. Thus, naturally, now that it's summer, I'm just now getting around to heavy spring cleaning. There's still boxes I never unpacked when I moved almost 2 years ago! (The stuff in those boxes, since I obviously don't need it, is mostly going to get sold on craigslist or tossed). Pathetic of me to let it go this long...
Piles of backpacking kit and computer stuff lying everywhere. Books. More books. Lots of rat cages -- how did I accumulate so many when I only ever use one at a time? Even more books.
Okay, enough time wasting here. Back to sorting through junk... Current Mood: busy

06:23 pm - Guinea Pig Just signed up as a subject in a UW medical study for the first time. Whee easy money.

12:25 am - Today... ... among other things, I made friends with a goat.
Not hard.
You just have to feed the freaky-eyed litle buggers and they'll follow you around hoping for more.

07:13 pm - Berries! Salmonberries are starting to ripen, and I saw some Thimbleberry bushes with flowers.
Now I need to go check the blackberry thickets I usually hit...
Yum. Current Mood: hungry

05:39 pm - Hypothetical question No jury in the world would convict me if I strangled the guy sitting next to me on the bus who is coughing every 30 seconds, right? Clearly justified self-defense.

Pity climbing rope is so expensive... Current Mood: enthralled

04:11 pm - First mission Did my first SAR missions last night, helping to get a badly injured hiker off of a mountainside at the pass. Lots of rope lowers down a steep snowfield, with plenty of ice axe work for all of us not attached to the litter.
Really made we wish the county supported some intermediate level of EMS between EMT and paramedic (The latter aren't going to be out in this environment except in very rare occasions) who can administer pain meds. This guy was in agony and it was a long evac.
The ski patrol group has some doctors and nurses who volunteer... none today, though. A couple of ski patrol guys were there (Mostly Seattle Mountain Rescue and ESAR), but nobody with advanced medical training able to push drugs.
Now the pager's going off again... Nice weather and a holiday weekend means lots of rescues. There was a second one going on at the same time as the one I went to yesterday. Current Mood: accomplished

12:14 am - buzz Over the weekend, I got stung by a wasp. It was remarkable only for what didn't happen.
I've managed to avoid getting stung since I was a kid, but back then, wasps would come from miles around to buzz around me whenever I stepped outside, and if I got stung on the elbow like this time, my entire arm from shoulder to hand would swell up, turn bright red, and be exquisitely painful for days afterwards -- even the weight of a long sleeved shirt would make me scream. This time? The site hurt like a bitch for an hour or two, the area right around ached a bit for the next day, and that was it. No massive swelling and tenderness.
Cool.

01:12 pm - Back Vacation was the 2008 state SAR conference, in Cashmere, a dinky little town between Leavenworth and Wenatchee, that as far I can tell, exists only because of a mildly famous candy factory. Most SAR groups in Washington had people there, as well as teams from Oregon and several provinces of Canada, Air Force survival and evasion school instructors... all sorts of groups.
Sunny weather, and temperatures in the mid-90's lead to a sunburnt Raevnos, even with SPF30 sunscreen. Should have taken the 55 that my mother found somewhere.
Lots of classes during the day, lots of sitting around drinking and socializing at night. It was obvious who had been to previous ones. ;)

08:43 am - Oh waily waily waily I'm old. And starting to swing around to the point of view of those 1-based index nutcases who insist that the millennium started in 2001.
Off for a bit of vacation to the wilds of eastern washington to mourn celebrate.

10:35 am - Ropes Yesterday was another SAR rope rescue class. This time, instead of just lowering people and an empty litter down a cliff at Little Si, we had someone in the litter along for the ride, and instead of just lowering to the ground, we stopped in mid air and switched to raising them up. Started really slow, taking a long time for each evolution, slowly getting faster with practice. I'm trying to get ahold of pictures people were taking.

11:11 pm - The other white meat On a night walk tonight doing some flashlight testing, I saw something I'd only ever seen once before: A live possum in the wild.
I've seen plenty of dead ones along the side of the road, captive ones -- heck, I once had a baby possum fall asleep on my arm. They're like really ugly rats -- but out in their normal environment, they're elusive little buggers.
The only reason I saw this one was that it was taking a crap in the middle of the trail and didn't run off till it was done.
That reminds me, I still need to post pictures about a hike I did last Sunday...

07:15 pm - Franklin pictures Lotsa of pics under the cut.
Depending on how I feel tomorrow, and what the weather's doing, I might try to find another ghost town down towards Mt. Rainier, or just a normal hike. Anything to put off chores. ;) Current Mood: contemplative
